Associated Bank Discussion

8/27/15 Here are a few reason’s this might not be a more popular choice:

1)There is are quarterly fees and quaterly AUM fees. “There is no fee to open a Health Savings Investment Account as part of your Associated Bank HSA. You will be assessed a $7.50 quarterly fee plus a service fee of $0.90 per $1,000 in investment account balances per quarter, which will automatically be deducted from your Investment Account.”

    2) Limited online management of account. “You may transfer funds back and forth between the HSA and Health Savings Investment Account by using the Health Savings Investment Account – Transfer Form. Return the completed form to the Health Savings Investment Support Area, using the contact information on the form. All contributions and distributions must be made directly to/from the HSA. Funds may be invested only by transferring funds to the investment account. To access your funds, you must first transfer funds from the investment account to the HSA. Allow up to three business days from the time the bank receives the request for completion.”

On July 13, 2017, Associated Bank sent letters to its clients announcing changes, including: “If your account is not tied to an employer group and does not meet the monthly average daily balance requirement of $2,500, it will be subject to a $3 monthly maintenance fee.”
Previously, the monthly minimum to avoid a monthly fee was only $500, one of the lowest in the industry. With this new fee, and the other fees for investment accounts, Associated Bank is no longer the best deal for HSAs.

I too received this mailing, a few days later an additional extended version showed up. In writing it states that the $2500 minimum is for deposit and investment combined. Additionally you’ll be required to keep at least $1000 cash in deposit account. However unlike before where we had to mail or call in to transfer funds from the deposit account to the investment account this will now be accomplished online. Also we’ll be able to automatically sweep funds into the investment portion. Should you drop below the $1000 minimum deposit balance, investments will be sold to bring the balance back up.
Also fund options are changing. A few of the Vanguard funds have been eliminated.
My new allocation will look something like this.
      Bond VBTLX %10 (Vanguard Index)
Large Value REIPX %25 (T. Rowe Price Dividend Income)
Large Blend VFIAX %25 (Vanguard 500 Index)
MId Cap Blend VEXAX %15 (Vanguard Mid Index)
Emerging Markets FNWFX %15 (American Funds)
International Stock VTIAX %10 (Vanguard International Index)
